The Eritrean Relief Association (ERA) was established in 1975 in Eritrea during a crucial time in the nation's history, amidst the struggle for self-determination against Ethiopian occupation. Despite the challenges of war, ERA emerged as a vital organisation, addressing urgent humanitarian needs and societal challenges. Initially headquartered in Khartoum, Sudan, ERA coordinated essential relief efforts, leveraging strong connections with the Eritrean diaspora and international NGOs, including Oxfam, CAFOD, War On Want, and others.
In 1982, a group of Eritrean graduate students alongside British friends of the Eritrean struggle, founded the Eritrean Relief Association UK chapter to extend these efforts, providing relief, rehabilitation, and development aid to those affected by drought, war, and displacement within Eritrea. ERA UK was incorporated as a PLC in England & Wales in September 1987 and registered as a Charity in December 1987.
Historically, ERA functioned as a relief and rehabilitation entity, focusing on providing immediate humanitarian assistance and addressing urgent needs caused by the war as well as natural disasters. The organisation played a crucial role in supplying essential medical aid, educational resources, and infrastructure support during the years of heightened crisis.
Today, ERA UK continues to operate as a registered charity in the UK, functioning as a company limited by guarantee and governed by a Memorandum of Articles of Association. The organisation has shifted its focus from relief work to long-term growth initiatives, emphasising sustainable development in Eritrea. This new direction is highlighted by our rebranding efforts, underscoring our commitment to empowering communities, promoting self-reliance, and building a prosperous future by eradicating poverty for all Eritreans without distinction. Despite our current limited capacity, ERA UK remains dedicated to championing the economic, social, and cultural interests of the Eritrean people. Recently, we commissioned Creativeonestop to design a new logo and website, marking a new beginning for us and ushering in a "NEW ERA."
In 2024, ERA-UK undertook a rebranding initiative that included introducing a new logo and launching an updated website. These changes were designed to clearly communicate ERA-UK's evolved mission and vision. This strategic move aims to enhance ERA-UK's visibility, attract new supporters, and reinforce its role in fostering long-term growth and prosperity for Eritrean communities. The rebranding marks a fresh chapter for ERA-UK, symbolising its readiness to embrace new challenges and opportunities in its mission to build a brighter future.
Upon Eritrea's independence ERA underwent a change within Eritrea - it became "Eritrean Relief & Rehabilitation Agency". Chapters world wide changed to locally agreed names while the UK has recently been renamed with a new logo ERA-UK
In 1988, the support and guidance for Eritreans in the UK underwent a significant transition. The responsibilities were transferred to the newly established Eritrean Community in the UK (ECUK). This move aimed to provide more focused and comprehensive support tailored to the needs of the Eritrean diaspora in the UK. The ECUK took on the role of assisting Eritreans with various aspects of integration, including cultural, social, and economic challenges. By establishing the ECUK, ERA-UK ensured that the Eritrean community had a dedicated organisation to advocate for their interests, offer guidance, and promote community cohesion, thereby enhancing the overall well-being and integration of Eritreans living in the UK.

By December 1987, it achieved registration as a charity, enhancing its credibility and access to funding. These milestones enabled ERA-UK to better support sustainable development initiatives in Eritrea, focusing on education, healthcare, and technology.
